There are a million of these kinds of books, so it was hard to settle on just one. To narrow the field, I essentially eliminated any books that were just by some random person. Having a wacky personality or a bold new insight into childhood development may be good for spicing up an episode of Dr. Oz, but I prefer a book that has the backing of some kind of medical institution. I was pretty sure that meant a book from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Sounds good, right? My big problem with the AAP books was that there were just too many of them. A book on "taking your baby home." A book on his first month. A book on his first year. A book on his first five years. A book on his third Tuesday through his ninth winter solstice. All very fine books, judging by reviews, but the whole collected seemed a bit too incoherent to me. And did I really need an encyclopedia's worth of literature to get this kid through his first year? Then there's this book. A measly handful of reviews, which is odd, considering it's the follow up to the well-reviewed Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy. That was our pregnancy book of choice, and we thought it was great. So we went for it, and I'm happy to say that this book is just as great. To me, the most important thing about this book is that it's got balance. It's readable, with enough humor to keep you interested, but not so much as to be cloying and false. It's not a roller coaster of hilarity written in the style of a home appliance manual or a midcentury scouting guidebook, but there's a good joke here and there. And it steers you in the right direction, laying out the pros and cons of each decision you need to make, but it doesn't get preachy. There's no agenda other than what's best for mother and child. Maybe best of all, though, is that it's concise without being cursory. It's got almost everything we've needed to know so far -- we haven't really been surprised by a recommendation from the pediatrician yet -- but doesn't ramble. All in all, a fantastic book. I can't imagine how they'd improve it.

No baby book is perfect. This one isn't either. But what I like about this book (that's missing in other books) is a clear activity list of what to do with a baby each month to help her develop and a milestones checklist. Other books I have don't provide this information in such a neat and helpful format. Other books don't have comprehensive lists or they, like 'What to expect...', complicate things too much by spelling out what the baby should be able to do, what it might do, what some babies could do. That's simply too nuanced, too much. This book also provides other information related to newborn care, common health issues, but not as much as other books.

Perfect baby book! Don't waste your money on "What to Expect"... The Mayo Clinic provides real answers backed by medical data. Best baby book out there for the analytical-minded that want real answers by educated individuals.

Most baby books are filled with cutesy emotional stories and thinly veiled judgments, but this one just presents the facts and recognizes that everyone's baby, and everyone's circumstances are different. For a person with a logic-based brain, this is a great resource without all the annoying emotional filler.

The information in the book itself is great but the Kindle version is awful. You can't bookmark, save, highlight, or search. If you decide to buy the book, buy a hard copy.

Looking up anything baby-related up on the internet is a nightmare for any new parent. When you get past all the stupid forum posts, you then have to figure out what is and isn't reliable advice on the parenting sites and all the conflicting information on medical sites. This book kept us on track - we looked up our questions and issues here first. Often, it was our only stop. When we felt is wasn't complete enough, we knew where to start at least.

I bought the Kindle version of this book. Don't do it. It hasn't been set up for Kindle. The font size is tiny. The links to the chapters don't work.

You can find a lot of different answers on google. But if you want sound advice from medical professionals, then I highly recommend getting this book. It's definitely a go-to book when you want to know more about your baby's growth stages, tips and advice such as about daycare, sun safety, how to enhance development, and so forth. I reference it a lot for what developmental advancements that I should be watching for at each month. For example, at two months, baby should be smiling, practicing lifting his head, and so forth.Aside, I was given the Mayo Clinic book for your pregnancy which I found was the best one of three that I had (one was the What to Expect when You're Expecting). So, I purchased this one because it is also very thorough and helpful.
